GREAT LAKES URBAN
Great Lakes Urban is a Zeeland, Michigan based 501(c)3 non-profit organization on a mission to connect and convene leaders to work together for the improvement of their neighborhoods, communities, and cities. From our base in the cities of Holland, Grand Rapids, Wyoming, and other West Michigan communities, Great Lakes Urban scales and replicates its CommunityWorks framework across North America through vetted coaches.
The CommunityWorks framework is founded upon the principles and practices of Asset Based Community Development, more commonly known as ABCD. ABCD is a growing movement that considers local assets as the primary drivers of sustainable community improvement. Building on the skills of local residents, the power of local associations, and the supportive functions of local institutions, ABCD draws upon existing community strengths to inspire the thriving neighborhoods and flourishing cities of tomorrow.
Great Lakes Urban (GLU) partners in specific neighborhoods with teams of residents and leaders who choose to work together for the wellbeing (i.e. Shalom) of their place. GLU provides training, coaching, and support services that help residents, organizational representatives, and community groups to effectively participate in this collaborative effort.
Great Lakes Urban provides a suite of training, coaching, and certification activities for urban congregation and community leaders in the Great Lakes region. GLU prioritizes the development and placement of leaders of color in the specific communities in which it is working.
Great Lakes Urban strengthens community and ministry organizations in under-resourced urban communities. GLU offers a wide range of capacity building supports for organizations and congregations. The intended outcome is healthy partnerships and engagements with neighbors who are strengthening their neighborhoods.
